How to Measure Blinds for Bay Windows

You don’t need to worry about the angles of your bay window to measure for blinds. There will be a small gap of light between each blind, and the size of this gap depends on the shape of your bay.

If you need more than three blinds to fit the shape of your window, or your bay window is in a bedroom, curtains will be a better solution.

Width - this is the size of each blind from left to right.

  1. Front Blind. Measure your centre window from side to side, including the frames, at the top and bottom. Check where the window is at it's narrowest and measure there. Pick the narrowest width, and then round down to the closest Width match on the website.
  2. Side Blinds. Measure your side windows from side to side, including the frames. If you have available wall space to the side of your windows then add as much of this as possible, up to 15cm, and at least enough to cover the windowsill.
  3. Now remove 5cm from your side window measurement (so there’s enough space for it to fit up against the Front Blind). Round down to the closest Width match on the website. If possible you want both side blinds to be the same width as each other.

Drop - this is the measurement from the top of the blind to the bottom, when it is dropped. Bay windowsills make it very difficult for a blind to drop infront, so we would recommend the bottom of your blind finishes on the windowsill.

  1. Measure the length of each window from the top of the windowsill to the top of the window frame (A) and from the top of the window frame to the ceiling or coving (B).
  2. If measurement B is less than 5cm, then you will need to fix your blinds to the ceiling. This requires a precise size match so please get in touch with our team who will be able to help.
  3. If measurement B is 5cm or more, then the blinds can be fixed to the wall.
Add together measurement A and half of measurement B (you want the top of the blinds to sit about halfway between the top of the window and the ceiling). Round up or down to the closest Drop match on the website and double check it fits, making sure that the top of the blind is at least 4cm above the top of the window frame, so there’s enough space for the headrail.
  4. As a requirement for child safety you will need to enter an ‘Installation Height’ on your order. This is taken from the top of the blind to the floor.

Once you’ve chosen your Drop, mark on your wall where the top of the blind will sit, this will help you later when it’s time to install.
