Measuring
Measuring windows might seem daunting, but it’s not as tricky as it looks. Want to know a curtain maker’s best kept secret? You don’t actually need pinpoint accuracy - there’s often wall space around the window that offers more flexibility than you’d think. That’s why our made-to-order curtains and blinds come in 5cm and 10cm increments, so you can breathe easy and still enjoy a beautiful tailored fit. With a few simple steps, you’ll have it sorted in no time.
You will need a pencil, paper and retractable metal tape measure. All measurements in our guides are in centimetres.
If you need any help just send us a picture of your window on Whatsapp or email to get started.

FAQS
What size screws do I need?
Our curtains and blinds weigh between 3kg and 30kg, so making sure you have the right kind of screw and rawlplug for your wall type is essential. We have found these sizes work well, but make sure you double check the best solution for your home:
Timber Walls: 4cm screws
Brick Walls: 5cm screws
Hollow Walls: 6 to 10cm screws, to reach the block behind
Plasterboard Walls: 10cm screws, to reach the block behind
Do not attempt to secure to plasterboard without a fixing into a solid sub-surface.
Do I need to worry about fullness or linings?
Pleat was created to take the skill of a traditional neighbourhood seamstress online, making the world of genuinely handmade premium quality window wear accessible to all.
We take care of every detail for you, so you don't need to worry about fullness calculations, lining thickness, buckrum depths or hook position.
All our curtains and blinds (apart from Slubby Sheer) are blackout lined and interlined throughout, making them perfect for any room in your home.
What if I can’t find the size I need, or I have an unusual shaped window?
Our team can help to see if our standard sizing is appropriate, and if not we can create your perfect window wear in any size you would like, with ourBespoke service. Just get in touch with our curtain twitchers who will be able to advise on next steps.

Any tips?
- If you have light switches or sockets around the window, ensure you avoid any areas where the cables run as you must avoid fitting a bracket there.
- Some curtain styles, such as Cwtch, have a frill of material called an upstand which will partly cover the pole. Measure for these as normal - the upstand is extra and shouldn’t be included in the Drop calculation.
- For multiple curtains and blinds in a room, try to align them so the tops are a consistent distance from the ceiling.
- Our handmade curtains are heavy, so may drop slightly after fitting. For curtains to either clear the floor or puddle on the floor, adjustments can be made to the position of the pins or to the height of the hardware during installation.
